Hi folks,
The long overdue, much unanticipated and not particularly missed, summer version of Operational Update.
Enjoy while sitting in an airconditioned room I hope – so muggy out there!!
CVS Closing
As we all heard in PEMA, the CVS at BCH is closing 7/16. What we’ve discovered is that since they are not reordering, they have already run out of many medications (Zofran being one). So – probably best to send new prescriptions elsewhere starting about … now.
Who To Page for Admissions
As mentioned in PEMA, there are new providers covering new teams. Should all be updated in the paging system and thank you to Andy Miller for getting us the new Who to Page sheet (attached and soon to be posted in a charting area near you). Please note there is now a “PHM Admission Team” pager for the PHM A/B/C services after 5pm.
Social Work Coverage/51-A’s
We are still struggling with social work coverage 12a-8a (nobody in-house) and to some degree from 5p-12a (covers the entire hospital, so may get pulled for deaths or other significant support needs). So for now, if an emergent 51-A needs to be filed, we will have to call ourselves. The CPT social worker can help guide you, but won’t file. If not emergent, certainly feel free to wait until the morning (8am) for social work to help.
For perusement purposes, I’ve attached the 51-A form. Working on a longer-term solution with nursing.
Back-Up Coverage for Travel
Please remember that if you are working a shift the day after a flight (especially if international), please consider arranging back-up coverage (or switching!!!).
Discharge Smartsets (thank you Jess C!!)
Working with your colleagues across the house, this year we now provide discharge instructions for:
-
- Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome
- Functional Neurological Disorder
- Social Determinants of Health (transportation, housing, financial, food…)
- ED Orthopedics Fracture
- ED Plastic Surgery / Oral Surgery follow-up
These instructions are suggested based on chief complaint, use of certain ordersets/consult orders. Please investigate all the ED Discharge Smartsets and send JKC any feedback for future suggestions! (… they don’t even fit on one screenshot)

And from Andy Miller…
NEW Lead Aprons for C-Arm Use!
- Brand new lead aprons and thyroid shields now located in rooms 46 & 50 (see picture below).
- Blue is smaller and Black is slightly larger in size.
- Please hang them on the rack as shown in the picture! 😊
Emergent Sterile Trays
- Surgical chest tube kits are still stored at the bottom of the trauma ParEx in room 52
- All other emergent sterile kits (tracheostomy, umbilical line, back up chest tube, etc.) are now stored in Room 52 in labeled shelves under the computer desk in the room (see picture below).
Vocera CareTeam Tip
- Have you had trouble finding certain roles (Respiratory Therapy, Child Life, Lab CA, etc.)?
- Use the CareTeam feature in Vocera to find roles assigned to the entire ED and your specific patient/team (see picture below).
- Sorry the list is sometimes long due to people not logging out of roles…
SMoLTAP LP Device – Feedback
- Please let me know if there is any feedback on the new adjustable shoulder attachments for the SMoLTAP device (see picture below) stored in the attending cabinet. Otherwise, we will plan to go back to the unadjustable version for now.
Okay, that’s it folks! Sorry so long – blame Andy!
Your Operations Team,
Jason, Andy and Ashley
